Variometers are the thermal pilot's best friend. The sound these little instruments make causes air to rise and the pilot can now circle in lift for thousands of feet until they reach down and switch the vario off.
     Seriously, the vario is an incredibly valuable tool for finding and centering lift. Altimeters can be integrated into the vario, or a seperate altitude instrument is available as a watch or windmeter.
