Participating in the Paragliding Maneuvers Clinic (SIV in Europe stands for Simulation d'Incident en Vol, or simulated incidence in flight) allows a pilot to induce a dynamic reaction and recover their paraglider to normal flight with an instructor's guidance. The goal is that the pilot will be better prepared to react properly to an unexpected or dangerous situation while flying outside the relative safety of the clinic environment.

Is it safe?

While we cannot guarantee complete safety, there are many precautions taken to ensure your safety and success in the clinic.
  • The course is conducted over water. Pilots wear life vests in case a maneuver gets challenging. The tow boat is quick to respond if there is a water landing. Normally, the only pilots who get wet are the ones that want to throw their reserve.

    Full Stall
  • All pilots participating in the clinic are briefed on each maneuver they will be performing. Emphasis is placed on proper response to each situation, with discussion of the possible complications and necessary pilot input.
  • During your flight, the instructor will talk you through each maneuver just prior to performing it. Then you will perform the maneuver while you continue to receive valuable input from the observant instructor.
  • Your clinic proceeds at your level. Each pilot is considered with respect to their flying experience and skills. Any maneuvers they perform are appropriate for them specifically. Some pilots come to simply improve their wingovers, and leave with much, much more! Every pilot can look forward to improving their coordination, seat steering and feeling for their glider. This may keep you from accidentally inducing a challenging maneuver while flying at your favotite site.

Tow Launch

Where is the clinic held?

Our clinics are done at various lakes, where we tow the pilots to approx. 2000 ft over the lake behind a boat. Our maneuvers instructors tow technicians are the most experienced and qualified anywhere.
The course takes place over three days, and maneuvers will be progressively more extreme over that period. With an average of eight persons attending the clinic, you will have plenty of time to learn from other pilots and their flights, as well as your own maneuvers.
As we mentioned before, the clinic is designed for ALL pilots, no matter what their experience level. Some have attended with less than ten flights, while some attendees are seasoned competition pilots. You will not be expected to do any more than you are comfortable with.

Asymmetric Collapse

What will we do?

During the safety training course, you will get the chance to do a series of advanced maneuvers, such as riser twists, asymmetric collapses, B-line stalls, full frontals, spiral dives, asymmetric spirals (eccentric dive), and coordinated wingovers using lots of weight-shift seat steering. Full stalls and spins are reserved for those intent on experiencing the extreme, and are not necessarily recommended.
We will repeatedly practice good habits during the course such as tweaking the A's, checking the stabilo, tapping the outside brake and rolling your hips toward the collapse (if you have the altitude) to more quickly inflate the wing. You will learn to use the roll, yaw, pitch and dive to more fully control and effect the glider during flight. Being able to practice proper reactions and response to challenging situations will give you more confidence in your everyday flying.
Please do not come expecting to leave the clinic with advanced skills. We are essentially "cheating" in smooth air, over water with instruction. Our goal is to simply help you understand your glider and it's range of reactions so you can better choose your response.
